If you’ve looked outside in the last hour, you already know: winter has arrived in full force. A Winter Storm Warning is officially in effect for Ithaca and the surrounding Tompkins County area, lasting until 7:00 PM tomorrow (Monday).
Here is the breakdown of what to expect tonight and the critical parking rules you need to follow to avoid a ticket (or a tow).
The Forecast
Heavy snow is expected to continue throughout the evening. We are looking at potential accumulations of around 5 inches tonight alone, with storm totals forecast between 12 to 18 inches by the time this system wraps up.
Lows will drop to around 12°F, but the wind chill will make it feel significantly colder. Visibility is already low, so if you don't have to go out, stay in.
Travel Advisory
The Tompkins County Sheriff has issued a No Unnecessary Travel Advisory. Roads are hazardous, and visibility is near zero in some spots due to wind gusts.
Please keep the roads clear for plow crews and emergency vehicles. If you must drive, proceed with extreme caution and keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.
Odd-Even Parking is in Effect
For those living in the city, Odd-Even parking regulations are active. This is crucial for keeping the streets passable for plows.
Tonight (Jan 25) is an ODD date.
The Rule: Park on the ODD side of the street until 7:00 PM.
The Switch: After 7:00 PM tonight, you should move your car to the EVEN side of the street to be positioned correctly for tomorrow, January 26.
Note: Always double-check the specific signage on your block, as some streets have permanent restrictions that override the general odd-even rule.
Stay Safe, Ithaca
Now is the time to hunker down. If you have elderly neighbors, check in on them (via phone or text) to ensure they have heat and supplies. Keep your devices charged in case of power outages.
Stay warm!
